21 May 2007
Wizz Air, the largest low cost - low fare airline in Central and Eastern Europe, celebrated its third anniversary on May 19 2007. Three years ago the first Wizz Air flight took off from Katowice International Airport in Poland and since then the carrier has transported 6.6 million passengers and become the leading low fare airline in Central and Eastern Europe.
Last year Wizz Air carried over 3 million passengers, 50% more than the previous year. In summer 2007 Wizz Air offers flights to 48 European airports on 90 destinations. Wizz Air has established operating bases in Poland (Katowice, Warsaw and Gdansk), Hungary (Budapest) and Bulgaria (Sofia) and will open its sixth base in Bucharest, Romania in two weeks. The carrier plans to fly 4.5 million passengers in 2007.
Wizz Air operates a fleet of modern Airbus A320 aircraft with an average age of 3 years, one of the youngest in the world. Thanks to Wizz Air’s purchase agreements with Airbus for up to 44 additional new A320s the airline’s fleet will consist of 13 airplanes this summer and up to 53 aircraft in 2012.
József Váradi, Chief Executive Officer said: “We’ve got another great year behind us. Today Wizz Air is the largest low cost carrier in each of our established markets such as Poland, Hungary and Bulgaria and we are well under way to take the number one position in Romania shortly. I believe that our market leadership, our commitment to low costs, our high quality operating model and our management capabilities are greatly underpinning Wizz Air’s continuing expansion plan in the future. We look forward to become the single largest airline of all carriers in Central and Eastern Europe in 2008.”
