On 27 March 2009, the first Austrian Boeing B767 (OE-LAE) to undergo a successful conversion to ‘winglets’ in the USA returned to Austria. Winglets are upturned ends on the tips of the wings of passenger aircraft which improve its aerodynamics. Austrian Airlines concludes staff negotiations

The ongoing negotiations over a package of measures for cabin staff of the Austrian Airlines Group (i.e. the Flight Operations Divisions of Austrian and Tyrolean) have successfully resulted in an agreement.

Austrian reports negative trend in passenger volumes

The negative trend currently impacting the entire aviation industry continued at the Austrian Airlines Group in February. Despite significantly reduced capacities (-14.2% measured in ASK) and the implementation of extensive marketing measures, it proved impossible to compensate for the fall in demand. The load factor stood at 69.1%, 3.0 percentage points lower than 2008.

The Austrian Airlines Group once again achieved exceptional figures in its punctuality and flight reliability in 2008: compared to all AEA (Association of European Airlines) member airlines, the ‘red-white-red’ carrier took leading placings in all segments, and was judged to have performed far better than many other renowned airlines.

Top marks for Austrian Airlines

It’s another top placing for Austrian Airlines: readers of business travel magazine Business Traveller have once again voted the airline into first place in the “Food & Drink” category. The Austrian airline also achieved an outstanding second place in the overall evaluation of the region’s best airlines in the “Best Airline in Europe” category, as well as second places for the level of service offered on board and on the ground, and for its cabin comfort. Finally, Austrian was awarded a third place for its safety provisions.

Austrian increases capacity on Dubai routes

Routes to the Middle East are central to Austrian Airlines Focus East strategy and have recently benefited from the introduction of the Premium Service Business Class. Among the most successful are flights to Dubai therefore Austrian Airlines will expand its seating capacity on the route from 1 March 2009.

Austrian Airlines reduces fuel surcharge

Due to a continued relaxation in conditions on fuel markets, the fuel surcharge for Austrian Airlines’ short and medium haul scheduled flights has been reduced by 3 Euros from 24 Euros to 21 Euros as of 23 December 2008. The surcharge for long-haul flights is reduced by 16 Euros from 98 Euros to 82 Euros.
