Egg headache at Wookey Hole Caves

The witch of Wookey Hole Caves has been left with egg on her face after a quarter of a million Easter Eggs arrived at the Somerset tourist attraction weeks before schedule.

A lorry-load of chocolate eggs is being given away to children who visit the famous cave home of the Witch of Wookey over the Easter Holidays from Saturday March 31 to Sunday April 15.

But management have been faced with a storage headache as they arrived early. A special temperature controlled storeroom had to be set up to keep the eggs from melting.

General Manager Daniel Medley said: “I don’t think we fully appreciated just how much space 250,000 Easter Eggs takes up. We thought about storing them with the cheese in the cave but the damp in the cave is not good for chocolate.

“Thankfully we had a storeroom that is used for foodstuffs for our restaurant and new hotel and they just about fitted in there. We can’t wait for the kids to arrive at Easter now so that we can give them away and get our store back!”

The eggs are being used in a Family Easter Egg Competition with up to 10 per child visitor able to be won.

Easter is always one of the biggest holidays of the year for Wookey Hole Caves with inland and indoor attractions being perfect for the children at a time of year when it is not quite hot enough for the beach.

The attraction includes lots of indoor fun, with an enormous new Wizards Play Castle added this year. Baby lambs have also been brought in specially for Easter along with a new Wookey Hole Olympic Circus Show in the Wookey Theatre every day, which includes trapeze, wire walking and unicycle tricks from the famous circus school run by Gerry Cottle.

The Easter specials have been added to the attractions, which include the world famous caves, prehistoric valley of the dinosaurs, fairy garden, wizards play castle, pirate zap zone and magical mirror maze.

Said Daniel Medley: “We now have more than 20 attractions included in the admission ticket so this is definitely the place to bring the children if you want to wear them out during the Easter holiday.”

Opening times and prices can be found at wookey.co.uk.
