The weather men have announced that the Gulf Stream that has been stuck over the UK for months – apparently with its taps left on – is finally moving on and a belated summer is on the way. Hooray!

Family-owned-and-run Looe & Polperro Holidays has the best selection of cottages of any specialist in the south east corner of Cornwall and west Devon, and here are just some examples of properties that are still available for rental this summer:

Clearbrook is a 3-storey property sleeping six people located near a trout fishery on the outskirts of the ancient mining town of Tavistock on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park. The carefully restored barn conversion overlooks the Heron Lakes and offers a high standard of accommodation throughout with its spacious layout and comfortable high quality furnishings. It also has a private large decked area overlooking the lakes with a wooden children’s games room with games, TV and Wi-Fi. A week in August costs from £995.

Lakeside Cottage Ho at Sandplace, Looe is a spacious, newly built (2011), three-bedroomed detached cottage which sleeps 5. It has views across the extensive grounds and parkland (which has won Looe in Bloom for the past two years) and is well fenced ensuring privacy and making it ideal for those with small children. The cottage has been completely refurbished to the highest standard and is a 10 minute drive from the Old Plough in at Duloe which is renowned for its food. A week’s stay in August costs from £900.

Reflections, in West Looe is a large, four-bedroomed property (sleeps 9) which was completely refurbished earlier this year has a rear patio garden and large sun terrace at the front. The property is perfect for a large family or group of friends and is just yards from the beach, has public tennis courts nearby and is a 20 minute walk from the town centre with its wide choice of shops, pubs and restaurants. A week’s stay in August costs from £1800 (saving £300 off the usual rate).

Trevallan is perfect for a couple or for those with a young child. It is a one bedroomed (plus a pull out bed), detached, newly built (2010) bungalow just yards from Plaidy Beach. The chalet-style bungalow has an open-plan living area with comfortable and modern lounge with leather settees and flat screen TV/DVD and French doors which lead out onto a decked verandah with garden furniture. A week’s stay in August costs from £560.
