Willow racehorse gallops into Cranbrook

A Cranbrook housebuilder has unveiled the recreation of a life-size racehorse to welcome residents into their new homes.

Exeter-based Persimmon Homes South West commissioned local willow and textile artist Sarah Le Breton to craft the sculpture, which stands two meters high and is made from willow sourced from the Somerset Levels.

Simon Perks, managing director at Persimmon Homes South West said: “We wanted to create something iconic and beautiful for the residents of our Galileo development to enjoy.

“As both Persimmon and Galileo are named after racehorses, we thought that nothing would be more fitting than a life-size horse crafted by a local artist with local materials.”

Sarah Le Breton said: “Living within just a few miles of Cranbrook, I think that it’s fantastic that as a local artist I’ve been appointed to create such a prominent piece of artwork for the community.

“The racehorse was too big to put together in my workshop, so I’ve spent the last month or so working outside battling the elements. I’ve come to affectionately call the sculpture the ‘rainhorse’!”
