Vauxhall’s revolutionary Ampera extended range electric vehicle has won the Green Car category at the 2012 British Insurance Vehicle Security Awards.

This is the latest in a string of over 40 top honours for the ground-breaking Ampera including the current European Car of the Year, What Car? Green Car of the Year and Top Gear magazine’s Green Car of the Year.

The British Insurance Vehicle Security Awards were established in 2004 to recognise those manufacturers who have produced the most secure cars, and to raise consumer awareness of what is best in vehicle security.

They are based on the New Vehicle Security Ratings (NVSR) scheme developed jointly by the Automobile Association, Department for Transport, Home Office and Thatcham, and backed by the British motor insurers and other organisations interested in improving vehicle security.

“This prestigious award shows the Ampera is not only one of the most cutting edge vehicles on the market but also one of the most secure, giving peace of mind to both our customers and insurers alike,” said Duncan Aldred, Vauxhall’s Chairman and Managing Director.  “The Ampera is truly a pioneering vehicle not just for Vauxhall but for the automotive industry as a whole. Its revolutionary E-REV technology makes it the first vehicle on the market providing uncompromised electric driving.”

Having arrived in UK showrooms in May this year, the innovative Ampera has a real-world battery range of between 25-50 miles, after which a small range-extender motor intervenes to provide up to an additional 300-plus mile range. At all the times, the Ampera’s wheels are electrically driven, setting it apart from hybrid vehicles.

Ampera pricing starts at £29,995 (including £5,000 government grant) for the Earth model. The car is available through a network of 24 specialist Vauxhall dealers.
