West London business advises on MOT changes

15th October 2012 Print

West London Volkswagen is advising motorists that new laws regarding MOTs could result in failure, following multiple changes to the test.

From January 1 2012, a number of new mandatory test items were added to the annual MOT, to comply with a revised European testing directive.

West London Volkswagen’s brand manager, Shaun Kirby, said: “Some problems previously deemed ‘advisory’ will now fail the standard MOT test and it’s important that motorists are aware of the changes.

“All cars require an MOT once they reach three years old, so the changes will affect thousands of motorists in West London.

“It is important that we raise awareness of these changes so motorists are aware of what they could face at their next MOT test.”

Among the new reasons for a car failing an MOT are warning lights are illuminated on the dashboard, including electronic parking brake, electronic stability control, air bag and brake fluid.

Other reasons include a speedometer that is not fitted, is incomplete, inoperative, has a dial glass broken or missing or cannot be illuminated, damaged or chafed fuel pipes and any airbag fitted as original equipment is missing or defective.

Shaun added: “We’ve no doubt that the new directive will cause a bit of confusion among motorists before the new system becomes effective in April.

“We’d therefore like to urge motorists to get in touch with West London Volkswagen if they have any questions about the new changes and how it will affect their car.”
