Gloucester's jubilee celebrations to continue with naming of new road

Gloucester is poised for an extra celebration to honour the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – thanks to Barratt’s forthcoming Glevum Court development in the city.

Planning for 83 two, three and four bedroom homes – to be located at the old Gardner Denver site off Barton Street – was granted earlier this year. And Barratt and Gloucester City Council will mark the launch of the development with a naming ceremony for Diamond Jubilee Close.

“This is a very special year, by anyone’s standards,” said Barratt development director, Ralph Hawkins. “Together with Gloucester City Council, we wanted to reflect the depth of feeling about the Jubilee in the naming of the road here.”

Dating back as far as 1915, the site has long been known as home to a number of engineering firms. And now Barratt is keen to herald in a new chapter for the local neighbourhood.

“We are very pleased to be playing a lead role in regenerating this part of the town,” added Ralph. “This particular site has lain redundant since 2009 and it is exciting to be involved in creating a brand new community here.”

Glevum Court is to be one of the few locations nationwide to feature a Diamond Jubilee Close, following a suggestion by local ward councilor, Saj Patel.

Paul James, Gloucester City Council Leader, commented: “This has been an amazing year for the city, with the Olympic Torch Relay and our parks receiving special status in recognition of the Jubilee.

“It is fitting, as part of our ongoing transformation of the city, that we mark another new development with a name to remind people of a very special year for the city and our country as a whole.”
