Achieving that indiscernible "you look really well, what's different?" comment is a subtle but game changing art, and one that clients at Errol Douglas Salon are enjoying thanks to the colour team's subtle "face framing" service.  Whilst some clients opt for a bold block colour change including  salon regular Emilia Fox, the untold story is around a technique that is, along with the right make up, a key component in softening the signs of ageing and creating a "can't put your finger on it" glow. Jade Blackley, one of Errol Douglas's youngest colour masters, explains:

"I love face framing because it's very subtle for a crucial effect in terms of enhancing complexion. It's a technique where I literally paint a bespoke colour, one that's been created to align with my clients' eyes, skin tone and age.  I apply directly to key light reflecting areas around the face. It creates a warmth that highlights all the best parts of my clients facial structures, and softens features as we get older"

She added: "carefully placed coppers and chestnuts on brunettes or redheads and honey or pearl tones on blondes instead of block colour really does ensure my clients look fresh and young at any age"

"Whilst the softening results mean that this is great for anyone over 30, it's equally effective for a different look on those that are young but wish to tone down a block colour and, for example, make a bigger statement through their wardrobe.  On classic older beauties like Meryl Streep or Julia Roberts, face framing works really well by opening up the face so they both look incredibly fresh. On a strong younger woman like Jesse J, breaking up a bold black precision cut bob with rust copper edging, is a subtle but instant look changer"

Other celebrities Jade has identified as "face framing" candidates include Julianne Moore and Catherine Zeta Jones: "On Catherine I would caramelise her heavy glossy brown locks with a sprinkle of soft, subtle but effective highlights around the hairline, to break up the matt, monochromatic colour which can sometimes look harsh. With Julianne I would strategically paint lighter softer copper tones around the hairline to open and frame her fair porcelain skin"

Jade's top tip for extending the life of face framing is to book in for a simple colour gloss in between appointments.  The clear gloss boosts existing colour work and lasts for up to 6 washes, making an excellent value for money (from £30 with another service) booster for brides the week before their wedding and for anyone with a big event to attend.

Face framing is just one of the techniques available with the Errol Douglas Salon colour team - the only team in the UK all to have "Colour Master" status.  Jade is responsible for actress Emilia Fox's blonde to red transformation earlier this year.
