The Buffalo Bourbon Empire

Following its acclaimed launch in Central London in October 2012, The Buffalo Bourbon Empire is set to relocate to an unassuming street corner of Hove from 25 January 2013. Brought to you by award-winning Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, this hugely successful pop-up bar, inspired by the Prohibition era, will be open for 2 weeks.

Secretly located on the top floor of The Wick Inn, Hove, take a step back in time as you ascend the spiral staircase that leads you to a small landing with a guarded door. Behind this door lies a true taste of a 1920s speakeasy, from its concealed entrance through to the authentic American cocktails served by skilful Prohibition bartenders. Whilst savouring an Old Fashioned, discover entertainment from the era, craps and roulette tables and even a Prohibition quiz night. Discerning Buffalo Trace connoisseurs will also be on hand to offer tastings and masterclasses where you can explore and learn about the world’s best whiskeys.

Warning: Practice the art of speaking quietly in public about The Buffalo Bourbon Empire so as not to alert the Federal Prohibition agents or neighbours. RSVP to guestlist[at]@buffalobourbonempire.com with your name, number of guests and preferred date or register for a masterclass at masterclass[at]buffalobourbonempire.com.

The Buffalo Bourbon Empire

Tucked away on a quiet corner of Palmeira Square, behind the thoroughfare of Western Road, discover mismatched furniture offset by dimly lit lamps and buffalo heads, before choosing from one of five Buffalo Trace signature cocktails. The drinks list includes classics that came into their own when America’s love affair with the cocktail was forced underground, from the Old-Fashioned to the Manhattan. Also try new tipples that are set to become quick favourites like the Pickle Back, a shot of smooth tasting Buffalo Trace followed by a chaser of pickle juice made from our secret recipe.

80 years since the repeal of Prohibition

Buffalo Trace Distillery, established in 1787, was 1 of only 4 distilleries in America to survive Prohibition, which lasted from 1919 until 1933. 2013 signifies 80 years since the Repeal of Prohibition, an era that marked a very successful period in the Distillery’s history through the possession of a permit to continue distillation for medicinal purposes where over 6 million ‘whiskey prescriptions’ were fulfilled. Under President Franklin Roosevelt, the Eighteenth Amendment was repealed by the ratification of the Twenty-first Amendment, ending national prohibition of alcohol in America on 5 December 1933.

Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon

On the banks of the famous Kentucky River where the buffalo crossed on their ancient westerly migratory route, Buffalo Trace is distilled, aged and bottled at the most award-winning distillery in the world. Crafted with the finest Kentucky and Indiana corn, selected rye and superior malted barley, this bourbon is aged in new oak barrels for 8 – 12 years in century old warehouses until the peak of maturity, determined by our Master Blender Drew Mayville. Buffalo Trace has a complex aroma of vanilla, mint and molasses, a pleasantly sweet taste with notes of brown sugar, spice, oak and leather, with a long and dry yet smooth finish.
