British Gas has released the latest version of its app giving customers the facility to pay their bills via their Smart devices for the first time.

It also helps people keep track of their energy use, submit meter readings and compare energy use to their neighbours in the local area.

British Gas is the first UK energy company to offer this solution to help customers take control of their energy bills.

Features of the app include:

Pay gas and electricity bills and view detailed account information including the account balance, tariff and payment type.

Compare how much gas and electricity the household uses with other customers in the local area

Submit meter readings for gas and electricity.

A handy torch to help you read the meter, which may be in a dark part of the house

Book an engineer to fix a faulty appliance or to complete an Annual Service. Track the appointment status of an engineer visit.

Contact customer services by email or telephone and access the 24 hour emergency telephone numbers.

Bert Pijls, Managing Director of Customer Services for British Gas said, "Giving our customers the tools to manage their energy in a way that suits their lifestyle is a top priority for British Gas.  This is an important development for our already industry-leading mobile app, and allows our customers to understand, control and manage their energy consumption."

Almost 600,000 customers use the App to view graphs of their personal energy consumption from the past 24 months, their account balance, last bill amount and when payment is due.
