Goodwood Revival

When motor racing first began at the Goodwood Motor Circuit in the austere post-War days of 1948, make-do and mend was all the rage.  Recycling as we know it today though was an entirely unknown concept.

Today, the popular Goodwood Revival - along with the annual Festival of Speed and Glorious Goodwood - are the very first motor sport and horse racing events in the world to successfully be certified to the International Standard for Event Sustainability Management, ISO 20121.

To mark the exceptional achievement of its ISO 20121 certification, Goodwood has commissioned leading independent South Coast fashion designer and recycling specialist Daisy Harris-Burland of Dumpster Design to create a wearable Revival-inspired eco-friendly dress.

Daisy Harris-Burland is no stranger to creating couture fashion pieces from reclaimed materials, and she has created a one-off vintage-style paper dress for Goodwood - in the spirit of 1948-1966 Goodwood Revival era - made entirely out of a surplus of 180 recycled Goodwood Revival information leaflets. The Goodwood paper brochure dress took Daisy 28 hours of work over a three week period to make.  It is a different departure from her other creations, made from a variety of recycled materials, including deck chairs and kitchen towels, for a highly bespoke eco-friendly approach to fashion.

Inspired by her love of old cars and all things retro, including her Morris Minor and unusual Fiat Twin Cam-powered Harbaron Special, which she lovingly saved from a scrap yard, Daisy says “I just love cars and engines, and many of my couture dresses are inspired by engine line drawings.  I’ve been coming to Goodwood since I raced a green powered go-kart around the famous circuit whilst still at school some years ago,” she adds. ,

Goodwood became the world’s very first motor sport and horse racing events organisation to successfully be certified to the International Standard for Event Sustainability Management ISO 20121 in the summer of 2012.

Goodwood’s in-house event operations team were externally audited by the British Standards Institute (BSI) in February and May 2012 when they were awarded BS 8901, the British Standard for Sustainable Event Management.  Following on from its BS 8901 success, the BSI were also able to award Goodwood with the International version of this standard when it was published in June 2012.

Goodwood has always been keen to ensure it integrates sustainability into its way of working, and it is at the very heart of the way the West Sussex Estate is run. Being able to implement and achieve the International Standard furthered Goodwood’s demonstration that it is formally addressing sustainability as a business and showing real leadership in the events industry.

“Sustainability is integral to how we run the Goodwood Estate, and the aim of our events is to support the sustainability of the wider Estate and ensure we maintain our living heritage” says Goodwood Revival founder the Earl of March.  He adds “implementing the Standard has allowed us to review all of our processes and set strategic aims to focus on during our events.  We have recognised areas where we are doing above and beyond best practice and areas where we can improve and develop.”

Tickets, grandstand seats, camping and other products for the 2013 Goodwood Revival can be purchased via the Goodwood website goodwood.com/motorsport.
