The humble evening clutch bag is set to be the biggest daytime trend of the spring/summer season, says retailer Debenhams.

Debenhams, which is market share leaders in handbags, has seen sales of oversized clutches soar by 86% versus this this time last year, and are attributing this to the queen of handbag clutchers, Victoria Beckham.

Sparkly, beaded or edged in ribbon or lace, the traditional clutch bag was, until now, reserved for nights out and days at the races or a wedding. However, clutch bags are now intended for use all day long and are bigger and bolder.

A host of celebrities are already big fans of the trend – with Cameron Diaz, Kate Moss, Blake Lively, Rachel Zoe and Jessica Biel all spotted out and about looking stylish while sporting day clutches.

What’s more, clutch bags are bigger than ever before – in making the move from night to day bag they have grown in size by more than 50%, with most over-size clutches perfectly equipped to fit the essential tools of being a busy woman inside.

Says Debenhams Head of Accessories, Amanda Wain, “Until now, the modest clutch was a bag that most women would only use for occasions – just enough room for the essential phone, money, makeup and keys.

“The fundamental difference in the new day-clutch is that it has gotten bigger. It needs to be big to fit our everyday lives within it, to make it as a serious day bag.”

The oversized clutch is also a catwalk regular, seen at the shows of Burberry and House of Holland.

Clutches now come in an array of animal prints, hardened metal tones and neon colour pops, meaning women can fit a fun clutch into their daytime wardrobe with ease.

Continues Amanda Wain, “It’s a cost-savvy way to adapt your look for the new season without spending a fortune. It’s also a really flattering look, and doesn’t even have to mean losing one of your hands, as most clutches have over-body straps or chains which can be worn or removed.”

Hand-held bags have grown up and gone big, bold and practical. There’s room for an electronic tablet, notebook, an array of makeup and a variety of child-friendly snacks for busy mums. Daytime clutches look effortlessly chic - without a hint of glitter, or small frill in sight.

Tucked under your arm in true Mrs Beckham style, an oversized clutch is the easiest way to refresh your look and be bang on trend for spring.

Concludes Amanda Wain, “Women don’t have to give up their favourite smaller clutch bags, which are perfect for parties and evening events. Sparkly, embellished small box clutches can still come out to play after dark!”
