Tahiti and her islands gears up for exciting events in 2013

Tahiti and her islands is the destination of choice for upcoming sporting, nautical and cultural events in 2013. The events provide an opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in and absorb Tahitian culture by interacting with the local people in a festive spirit.

The 2013 calendar includes the following events, ranging from enthralling sports competitions to celebrations of French Polynesia’s traditions, all set against an idyllic backdrop of turquoise lagoons and sandy shores:

Tahiti Pearl Regatta
8th - 12th May 2013
In its 10th year, the Tahiti Pearl Regatta will sail through Raiatea, Huahaine, Bora Bora and Taha’a. Considered the most important regatta in the South Pacific, the event combines competitive sailing with cultural celebrations including traditional dancing, singing and food tasting offering tourists a chance to sample authentic Tahitian cuisine. Participation is open to all types of sailboats.

Heiva Va’ai Tahiti
28th - 13th July
Heiva Va’ai Tahiti is one of the largest annual cultural festivals celebrating French Polynesian island traditions, known as ‘the celebration of life’. Taking place in To’ata Square in Papeete and Moto’i Place in Vaitap, Bora Bora, the festival showcases Tahitian music, dance, traditional dress and cooking and craft demonstrations. The celebration is a chance for visitors to gain an insight into local culture in a festive, joyful atmosphere.

Billabong Pro Surfing Competition
6th – 27th August
This August, 48 of the top competitive surfers will flock to Teahupo'o, south east of Tahiti for one of twelve stops on the Billabong World Championship Tour. The competition attracts the world’s best surfing talents who show of their skills, providing an electric atmosphere in laid back Tahiti.

Hawaiki Nui Va’a international canoe race
November
Teams from all over the globe will head to Tahiti and her islands for a three day traditional canoe race taking place in the Windward Island archipelago. The route commences in Huahaine, then on to Raiatea, Taha’a and finishing at Bora Bora. In its 22nd year, the event provides a great spectacle for tourists, with over 100 traditional canoes taking part.
