If you are a food lover looking to have a holiday infused with superb taste sensations, a real smack from your bacon and delicious treats with a local food provenance, head to Eden in Cumbria – an area rapidly becoming a first class green tourism destination with local food at its heart.

To provide a flavour of what is on offer in this largely undiscovered English destination, responsible tourism organisation, Nurture Eden, a RDPE funded tourism development project, has produced a film, which is already tickling taste buds. Taking a look at this will show you how to eat the stunning views of tranquil Eden and how to access the delicious treats of the Eden Valley.

A facebook competition is supporting the film’s launch. Prizes include a selection of tasty Appleby Cheese or 5lb of famous Cumberland Sausage from the butchery team at Cranstons and wine and wine tasting from England’s most Northern winery, High Cup. Lucky winners can redeem their prize with passionate local food producers on arrival in Eden. To enter, head to the Nurture Eden facebook page, watch the beautiful film and answer the question posed.

The film gives you insights into Eden’s breathtaking scenery and also provides a feel for the infectious passion of its producers – integral to what is being dubbed ‘Edible Eden’. All of these can, hand on heart, say that this piece of venison, or that bottle of English fruit wine has only travelled the distance from their farm or vineyard before delighting you.

You can also see the welcoming faces of those who take their tasty produce to Brough, Orton or Crosby Ravensworth Farmers Markets or the August Eden Foodival and others who create marmalade excellence for the World’s Original Marmalade Festival at Dalemain, near Penrith.

As footage focuses on the butchery counter at Cranstons in Penrith, cheese production at the Appleby Creamery, the deer herd at Deer ‘n’ Dexter, or bread being kneaded and baked in the organic mill at Little Salkeld Watermill, you will begin to wonder why you’ve never checked out Eden before.

You might be enticed by the thought of hiring an electric bike, as shown in the film, which can take the strain off your legs as you cycle. Alternatively, you might be tempted to get your walking boots on to explore an intriguing stone circle or to bag a view, or start dreaming about the fun to be had canoeing on the glorious River Eden and mountain biking in Eden’s wide open spaces.

Eden is a place in which you can leave the car parked up and walk, cycle or use public transport to travel between foodie venues, seeing more and breathing in invigorating, free-of-charge fresh air – as well as walking off the calories!

The film may also tempt you to explore Eden’s beauty via the wonderful Settle-Carlisle Railway, horse riding in tranquil and breathtaking surroundings on bridleways in the Ravenstonedale area, and an iconic Cumbria Classic Coaches service, which explores the local area and beyond.

You could become one of the keen foodies learning a new skill in a scone-making workshop at the Greystoke Cycle Café, or be a proud parent of a child at Augill Castle’s Little Cooks cookery school getting encouragement and ‘real food’ messages from owner, Wendy Bennett.

There is so much depth to the food of Eden that Nurture Eden says no foodie should miss out on a stay. A few days or a week here can not only provide the true taste of east Cumbria, but also thrill with its combination of fantastic, flavour-filled food, peace and tranquillity and exciting things to do in a responsible and low impact way. Eden is a unique destination and its food offer is exceptional. It just needs to be discovered and explored.
