Students urged to do their insurance homework before heading off to Uni

3rd September 2013 Print

M&S Bank is urging students to check their personal possessions are fully covered before heading off to University this September.

As many as one in three students fall victim to crime while at university, with about 20 per cent of student theft occurring in the first six weeks of the academic year

Neil Rogers, head of home insurance at M&S Bank, said: "Starting University is a thrilling time for any student. Understandably in all the excitement of planning what you'll need, where you're going to live - which is often away from home for the first time, as well as the social diary for freshers' week, insurance isn't always front of mind.

"However, with the average student now taking thousands of pounds worth of personal belongings to university, including laptops, TVs, tablet devices and mobile phones, ensuring your belongings have sufficient cover has never been more important."

Some students may find that their personal possessions are already covered under their parent's home insurance policy, but it's important to check this and ensure separate cover is arranged if not.

Students whose parents have M&S Home Insurance Premier Cover which covers contents can take advantage of unlimited cover for their possessions while they are in student accommodation. This includes cover for damage, flood or theft of items left in student accommodation; students will also be reassured to find that their bike is also covered.
