The previous-generation Mazda6 Estate has been named ‘Best Estate Car’ at the Used Car of the Year 2013 awards presented by the experts from Britain’s biggest and best selling car buyer’s guide What Car? magazine.

The 15 category winners were announced during the awards ceremony at London’s Hurlingham Club last night, when the diesel-powered Mazda6 Estate 2.2-litre diesel 163ps TS2 was declared ‘Best Estate Car’ and overall winner in the ‘more than £6,000’ category.

Presenting the award, Chas Hallett, editor-in-chief, What Car? Commented: “The Mazda6 Estate wins the Estate category as it really is more than an impressive load carrier, it’s affordable to buy and run, it’s reliable and comfortable, it’s safe and loaded with high tech gadgets – it’s a great all-rounder which estate cars need to be.”

Explaining the Mazda6’s selection in more detail, the November edition of the influential monthly publication states: “The Mazda6 Estate ticks all the boxes with a large 519-litre boot that’s a usefully square shape, rear seats that can be easily folded down and a spacious cabin which allows a family of four to get comfortable on a long journey. The 2.2-litre diesel is great with 360Nm of torque which is perfect for when the boot and cabin have been filled.”

The Used Car of the Year judging panel for 2013 was made up of hugely knowledgeable motor industry professionals and comprised David Gerrans (Warranty Direct), Steve Huntingford (What Car?), John Owen (Fords of Winsford), Alan Senior (CDL Ltd) and Rory White (What Car?).  The panel studied each candidate car’s running costs, reliability, driveability, quality, longevity, safety features and desirability.

“We are delighted that the Mazda6 Estate has been acknowledged as a ‘best used buy’ by the What Car? judges,” added Peter Allibon, Sales Director Mazda UK. “The Mazda6 Estate has always been popular in Britain and when we introduced the 2.2-litre diesel with 163ps in 2010, it took the car’s capabilities to a whole new level. With acceleration to 60mph in less than 10 seconds, up to 52.3mpg on the combined cycle, generous equipment and Mazda’s legendary reliability, the Mazda6 Estate is a compelling ownership proposition as a used car.”
