Red Wine: A new anti-ageing remedy?

23rd October 2013 Print

As we come out of our fresh-faced teenage years and our first wrinkles appear, the first pang of panic takes over. We can’t possibly be aging already? Short of going under the knife to iron out your face, there’s very little that you can do about your body’s natural maturation. Not even an aisle of anti-aging creams can help you. However, there are healthy ways to stay looking younger and healthier for longer. Red wine is your new best friend.

But isn’t alcohol bad for you? In moderate doses (one five fluid ounce glass a day for women and up to two for men) red wine has a whole range of health benefits which can enhance your life – one of those properties is longevity and anti-aging.

What is it about red wine that stops the clock?

Red wine is saturated with antioxidants that halt damaging free radicals that help cause premature aging. Polyphenols, including resveratrol, are concentrated highly in red wine from the dark skins of grapes. Red wine has also been proven to reduce levels of stress in the body, which also cause signs of aging. It’s also the only alcohol that actively helps you to get to sleep soundly, as it’s packed full of melatonin.

Sleeping more restfully and regularly has been proven to keep you looking younger for longer. Beauty sleep, anyone?

What sort of results should you expect?

In the long term, regularly drinking a moderate amount of red wine will help you look healthier, younger, and keep your skin glowing. Mentally, red wine can also stop aging and keep your memory sharp. Studies show that red wine drinkers have a significantly lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s, as it stops the build-up of protein plaque on the brain cells, which manifests in dementia patients. Science.

You’re also less likely to develop cancers and diabetes! Red wine increases the good cholesterol in your body and protects your cardiovascular system from the bad. This is why there is a ‘French Paradox.’ Somehow, the Parisians subsist off a high-fat diet and remain slim and heart-healthy. Witchcraft?

No, just wine, say scientists. A moderate amount with dinner can help keep you slimmer and healthier as you grow older.

What if you can’t consume alcohol?

Some people shouldn’t drink red wine. It’s best to consult your doctor about this, as it may conflict with certain prescribed medications and boost your risk of getting breast cancer, if your family has a history of the disease. Tread carefully before you start opening the bottle regularly.

Instead, you can gain similar benefits from eating dark grapes, pomegranates, blueberries, and dark chocolate. Does sound too bad, does it? However, red wine seems to be more high-powered in terms of anti-aging than these substances. So it’s always worth checking out Vivas Wine for new deals (we recommend the Chateau Tour Pibran).

Will winemakers put plastic surgeries out of business?

No, not while there is such a grand level of body insecurity in society and a pressure to look unnaturally young.
