The Heritage Motor Centre (HMC) in Gaydon, Warwickshire has launched a new programme of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) education sessions suitable for use across the KS2 to KS4 and BTEC age ranges. The Museum, which celebrates its 21st birthday this year, has previously focused mainly on providing programmes based upon the History of the British motor industry. The Museum houses some of the world’s best known examples of British automotive design and technology and hopes to use its unique collection to inspire future generations to pursue STEM education and careers.

The new programmes have been designed by University of Wolverhampton graduate David Wilkinson – employed by the Museum via the KEEN (Knowledge Exchange & Enterprise Network) programme which is part-funded by European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and administered by the University of Wolverhampton. David has focused on ensuring these programmes are relevant to the national curriculum and that they allow children and students to learn in a hands-on way with engaging and enjoyable activities that combine guided activities in the education room with time spent exploring the museums extensive collection.

Tim Bryan, Head of Collections and Interpretation, stated “This year is our 21st birthday and, while we celebrate our first 21 years, we are very much looking forward to the future. Our new STEM education sessions are just one step in our quest to develop our learning programmes and increase the quality and quantity of education taking place at the museum, supporting our primary status as an educational charity. The motor industry has played such an important role in the West Midlands, it is great that we have this chance to share our knowledge & passion on this subject and to inspire a new generation of enthusiasts."
