Have a splashing day out in the South Lakes

All England Open Stone Skimming Championships

Head to Fell Foot Park at the bottom of Lake Windermere near Newby Bridge on Saturday August 16, for the 2014 All England Open Stone Skimming Championships, where you could scoop an official English sporting title, have a splashing day out and climb a Beech tree!

The Championships are organised by South Cumbria Rivers Trust as a fundraiser for its conservation work in the South Lakes, but the event is a bona fide official English sporting occasion that could see you enter the country’s sporting record books as well as winning a prize.

Stone skimming is a skill in itself, but it’s also something any man, woman, child or team (for the first time this year) can have a go at. Anyone can pick up their stone and skim, which is what makes it such a great event and masses amounts of fun, win or lose.

Lengths achieved by skimmers (who must make their stone bounce on the water three times, while keeping within the official ‘lane’ for the skimming) will start at 11am and carry on to 4pm. At the same time, National Trust Rangers will be helping children to enjoy some of the 50 things to do before they are 11 ¾ and South Cumbrian Rivers Trust volunteers will be arranging stone-themed activities.

There will be a fabulous opportunity to climb a Beech tree as The Great Big Tree Climbing Company supervises this activity and stalls, barbecue and beer tent will also be on site to complete the great day out.

Make for the waters of Windermere on August 16 and assist South Lakes’ conservation at the same time. Entry fees for the stone skimming are just £3 for an adult, £1 for a child and £10 for a team of four. There is a separate charge of £15 for the tree-climbing activity.
