Moderno - Dorothy show home

The new ‘Dorothy’ show home, recently unveiled at Moderno in Brighton, brings to life the fun Wizard of Oz theme that Bellway has created, proving there really is ‘no place like home’. The Dorothy is a three-bedroom semi-detached house set across three floors, where stylish contemporary design and spacious interiors combine with a fantastic Brighton location.

Nicky Morton, Sales Director at Bellway Homes South East comments: “We wanted to create a show home that stands out from the crowd and offers something fun, while showing off how this space works brilliantly as a family home. The Dorothy is a design oriented home for a family that values style and quality and wants a space that works for how they lead their busy lives. The playful show home theme is executed in a subtle and sophisticated way and helps entice the potential purchaser to explore the space within. We will be intrigued to see how many of the Wizard of Oz references visitors will pick up on.”

The spacious open plan kitchen and dining area on the ground floor is bright and homely taking Dorothy’s Kansas home as its inspiration. The walls are decked in blue gingham print wallpaper like Dorothy’s trademark dress, while the white picket fence motif – used on the back of dining chairs and as a coat stand – is a nod toward Auntie Em’s farm. Other cosy touches to remind us of home are the table laid for tea, the cheerful prints of the sofa and cushions, a framed print of an old style TV and a red rocking chair on the patio. The kitchen dining area is flooded with natural light thanks to bi-fold doors that can open the space up completely to the outdoors. The sleek and modern specification includes a contemporary kitchen with white high gloss units fully equipped with integrated appliances.

Humorous Wizard of Oz touches appear throughout the home such as the arch shaped bookcase above the desk in the study, where the rainbow of coloured leather bound books brings to mind the song ‘Somewhere over the rainbow’. Dorothy’s little terrier dog Toto crops up a couple of times in decorations including as the base of a lamp, while little mice perched on the bookcase and windowsill recall the Field Mice scene.

The master bedroom on the top floor takes inspiration from the Good Witch with an ethereal colour scheme of white and silver, where sumptuous materials such as velvet cushions and curtains and a modern statement glass chandelier create an atmosphere of luxury. This bedroom also includes mirrored fitted wardrobes, an en suite bathroom and Juliet balcony, creating a tranquil retreat. In contrast, the only dark colour in the room is a black glass hand sculpture on the dressing table which references the point when Dorothy’s house lands on the Wicked Witch of the West killing her and leaving nothing but her feet.

On the first floor the sitting room is again elegant and glamorous, with a crystal chandelier, gold mosaic wallpaper and abstract, mirrored side table. Across from this, the second bedroom is more masculine in style and represents the Wizard with a scientific theme, including a lamp in the shape of a glass chemistry flask, an artwork based on the periodic table and a decorative piece based on multi-coloured test tubes.

Moving into the garden, the visitor is transported to the Emerald City where lush planting and grass represent the vivid green that Dorothy witnesses when she reaches it. The bright yellow garden chairs and sandy coloured brickwork inlaid into the path stand for the Yellow Brick Road, while the lion head water feature reminds the lion, one of Dorothy’s companions. (Is there anything to signify scarecrow/ tin man?).

The Dorothy is one of four house types at Moderno, all of which offer flexible layouts and generously sized rooms. Moderno is located in a peaceful cul-de-sac in a leafy residential area, surrounded by landscaped grounds and woodland nearby. Blending seamlessly with the local suburban environment, the homes offer all the benefits of eco technology incorporating innovative green features that mean energy saving and lower utility bills for residents.

Moderno is conveniently located close to everything Brighton has to offer, while the tranquil rolling countryside of the South Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, are never far away. Transport links are close at hand with Preston Park station in easy walking distance, from where Central London is just an hour away by train and direct trains to Gatwick Airport take half an hour. By road, Moderno is close to the A27, which provides convenient access along the South Coast while the A23 towards London is less than 10 minutes away.

The Dorothy is priced from £559,995. Buyers can take advantage of Bellway Homes’ Express Mover and Part Exchange schemes. For further information visit the sales centre at Fox and Sons Estate Agents in Hove, or visit bellway.co.uk.
