Rexton R-Line for Ssangyong at British Motor Show

22nd July 2008 Print
A new customised version of the Rexton will take centre stage on the SsangYong stand at the British International Motor Show (ExCeL London, July 23-August 3).

The SsangYong Rexton R-Line is the work of celebrated designer Afzal Kahn and his Project Kahn, who has carved an international reputation for applying old-world craftsmanship and the finest materials to turn standard cars into bespoke works of art.

Built at Project Kahn’s Bradford facility, the Rexton R-Line is based on the Rexton 270 SPR – an already well-equipped and imposing four-wheel drive SUV that offers outstanding value at £24,995. But the R-Line takes this several stages further with added luxury and design flair.

Inside, a high quality leather interior cossets the Rexton’s occupants. On the road, the R-Line has considerable presence with lowered suspension, a bespoke Kahn exhaust system and 22 inch Kahn Design alloy wheels.

Even in standard form, the Rexton 270 SPR has climate control, electronic stability programme (ESP) with active rollover protection (ARP), hill descent control (HDC), ABS, parking sensors, cruise control, auto lights and wipers, side air bags, electric folding door mirrors and heated seats. Leather upholstery is standard, but the Kahn R-Line is further upgraded.

The Rexton uses a more powerful version of the SsangYong 2.7 five cylinder turbo diesel engine producing 186 PS and a thundering 401 Nm torque at 2,400rpm. Transmission is a Mercedes T-Tronic automatic with permanent all-wheel drive. Suspension is independent all round. The Rexton R-Line is priced at £29,995 with a rear spoiler and Kenwood navigation system the only options.

Kyron and Rodius
It’s over 10 years since SsangYong last exhibited at the British Motor Show and the South Korean make’s presence is part of its re-launch this year. As well as the debut of the Rexton R-Line, special upgraded versions of the Kyron and Rodius will also be shown as examples of how already well-equipped cars can be further improved and customised.

The Kyron 2.7 SPR is fitted with Cobra side bars, Miami 19 inch wheels and tyres, chrome mirrors and Daytona twin exhausts. Inside is a Kenwood navigation system and twin headrest DVD players complete with games. All this adds just over £4,700 (plus fitting) to the on-the-road price of the SPR at £22,495, but could be added to any Kyron starting from £14,995.

A similar package on the Rodius includes a 10 inch roof-mounted DVD system. Not including the twin exhausts, the additional equipment on the Rodius adds less than £3,700 (plus fitting) with the seven-seater line-up starting at £14,995.

Dealer Drive
SsangYong is also using the occasion to talk to dealers about the benefits of the SsangYong franchise. Koelliker UK, the Italian-owned distributor that acquired the franchise late last year, has transformed the business not only by offering specifications and prices that are in-tune with the UK market, but also by providing dealers with new programmes, systems and full, professional support.

David Foster, SsangYong dealer development manager said: “The Motor Show is a great opportunity for us not only to talk to customers, but also to meet existing and potential dealers. Six months of reform and solid work mean that we now have the business model that SsangYong deserves. As well as offering buyers very competitive models that will work for them, we can also talk to dealers about how SsangYong can work for them too.”
