The Welcombe Hotel in Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire has created a giant edible Gingerbread house to celebrate Christmas. The house, which measures 80cm long, 40cm high and 50cm in width, is a replica of the hotel and was created by the new pastry chef Petar Stoykov. It took three days to bake all the components and a further three days to assemble and decorate it. The house, which is made out of butter, eggs, sugar, ground ginger, ground clove, ground cinnamon and flour, has now gone on display in the lounge until the New Year for guests to admire.

Gingerbread houses are often created as a centrepiece for display in hotel lounges and reception areas to showcase the Chefs skills and provide a festive focal point. Gingerbread production is a festive tradition throughout Europe and further afield with the most common being the German and Austrian varieties. The Gingerbread house is said to be derived from the traditional markets erected for the festive season. The houses are also linked to the famous Hansel & Gretel story.

Shaun Van Looy, General Manager at The Welcombe Hotel, stated “We are delighted to showcase this amazing imitation of the Welcombe in the form of a giant Gingerbread house. I would like to thank Petar for the creation which showcases his talent as a very experienced pastry chef. We hope our guests enjoy the display along with the rest of the hotels’ traditional Christmas decorations and festivities”.
