Iveco Eurocargo in shreds with AXO Bedford-based secure destruction specialist AXO Shredders Ltd has taken delivery of a new 18 tonne Iveco Eurocargo to serve as the company’s frontline demonstrator vehicle, supporting its sales of mobile shredding equipment across the UK.

Supplied by Iveco distributor Norfolk Trucks, the Eurocargo 180E25S is mounted with a box body built by GM Billings, housing state-of-the-art AXO hydraulic shredding equipment, manufactured in New Zealand. It will be used to provide a confidential waste destruction service which meets the highest security standards, being equipped to shred paper, magnetic media and CDs.

Dave Gilberd, Sales Engineer for AXO Shredders in the UK, explains: “Every year our UK sales of mobile shredding trucks is growing, with the Eurocargo our preferred 18 tonne chassis owing to its all-round versatility and reputation for good reliability in the industry. It also offers a healthy payload capacity which enables it to be an extremely profitable option for customers processing large volumes of paper.

“Another major benefit of the Eurocargo is its manoeuvrability and good all-round visibility from the cab, which makes parking directly outside office buildings in congested urban areas as straightforward and stress-free for the driver as possible,” he says.

The shredding equipment mounted in the Eurocargo enables operators to maximise information protection for their customers, which can include all types of organisations, from banks and government offices through to pharmaceutical companies and lawyers. These days, with the growth of identity theft and commercial businesses becoming more security conscious, even small businesses are seeking the services of firms which can destroy their sensitive waste paper.

“A core part of the vehicle’s suitability for this application is its Eaton 5206B six-speed transmission, which is linked to a Stallion Hydrocar PTO and ideal for driving the on-board hydraulics”, adds Mr Gilberd.

Power is provided by Iveco’s 5.9 litre Euro 4 tector engine, which is capable of producing up to 250 hp at 2,700 rev/min and up to 850 Nm of torque between 1,250 and 2,100 rev/min. In line with Iveco’s Euro 4/5 policy for its medium and heavy truck range, this engine benefits from selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology which utilises a 25 litre heated urea tank, together with an AdBlue dosing system and catalytic converter.

The AXO shredder is designed to process up to 2.5 tonnes of paper per hour, with each load of paper being lifted into the vehicle on a hydraulic bin-lift, and fed into the shredder via an internal bin tipper. The vehicle offers a payload capacity of up to five tonnes, with the shredded goods being pushed into the rear compartment of the body and stored until the vehicle returns to base. On arrival, a rolling floor conveyor ejects the shredded contents, enabling all paper-based material to be baled and recycled at a local paper mill.

Prior to entering service as AXO’s new demonstrator, the Eurocargo took pride of place on the company’s stand at the Recycling and Waste Management Exhibition, held at the NEC between September 11 and 13, 2007.
