Rooms with a view on the Italian Riviera

16th June 2015 Print

Liguria, otherwise known as the Italian Riviera, in North West Italy is a long narrow coastal region boasting some of the most stunning panoramas in Italy. The coastline views are unblemished as they remain free from large resorts and high rises, whcih has allowed the small, independent hotels to offer some of the best views in Italy. Here is a selection of the best hotels with views for short breaks this summer.

Hotel Vis a Vis, Sestri Levante

The aptly named Hotel Vis a Vis in the small town of Sestri Levante has arguably the best views of any hotel in Liguria. Located behind the town, guests enter the hotel through a long underground tunnel ending in a lift. This then whizzes guests up to the hotel which has a commanding view over Sestri Levante. The junior suite (room 315) has the best viewpoint with a large balcony offering panoramic views over both of the towns bays, which are so long and majestic that they are often known as Bimare (two seas). One of the bays, the Bay of Fables, is named after Hans Christian Anderson, who was stunned by the views and labelled them 'fabled'. The views also inspired Dante and Byron. The junior suite costs £255 in low season and £340 in high season.

Hotel Porto Roca, Monterosso

Perched high on the cliffs above the Cinque Terre town of Monterosso and surrounded by steep vineyards, this hotel is all about the location. The 40 bedroom hotel is built into the cliffs and looks out onto the crystal clear waters of the Cinque Terre and its lush green vegetation. The terraced restaurant is the highlight with every table looking straight out to sea, pefect for watching the boats sail past.  Sea view rooms start from £180 per night.

Villa Rosmarino, Camogli

Located above the traditional fishing village of Camogli, Villa Rosmarino is a traditional Ligurian palace style building with green shutters and frescoed walls. The four floor hotel has just six rooms, each with private marble bathrooms, walk in wardrobes and a modern minimalist design. There is also a pool for guest only use. Its appealing position above Camogli offers seaviews over the stunning colourful village. The hotel was built in 1907 and was originally used as an olive mill and stop off between long seafaring journeys. The hotel still retains its historical character with the grind stones of the oil mill now being part of the garden decoration. Overnight stays at Villa Rosmarino start at £120 per room per night.

Villa della Pergola, Alassio

Villa della Pergola is located in Alassio in western Liguria and is an elegant late 19th century architectural masterpiece, overlooking the enchanting Gulf of Alassio. The house sits within some of the most stunning ornamental gardens in Liguria. These have hundreds of varieties of exotic and fragrant plants from South African bird of paradise strelitzias to banana trees, hydrangeas, lavender, bougainvillea and jasmine, all interspersed with fountains, steps, terraces and olive groves. Deluxe rooms cost from £250 per night and suites with seaviews cost from £375 per night.
