How industrial PCs differ from consumer PCs

Industrial computers (those used by businesses and government agencies) differ greatly from the average consumer’s computer. Industrial computers are designed for an entirely different purpose than any other computers. They need to be durable, reliable, secure, and are designed for optimal functionality. Consumer computers on the other hand do not require the same level of durability or reliability and they are designed for a combination of function and appearance. 

Because of the differences in how each type of PC is designed, each type is built very differently. Once they are built, each PC follows a very different pathway to their ultimate consumer, whether that be a business or government agency, or the average consumer. Then they are used very differently based on the purposes that they were designed specifically for. Basically, industrial and consumer PCs differ in almost every way.

How to Build a High-Quality Industrial PC 

Because of their different uses and designs, high-quality industrial PCs are built very differently than the average consumer PC. Industrial PCs need to be very durable and reliable. For this reason, the components of these PCs are built with stronger and higher quality materials. 

They utilize more durable materials such as an industrial PC board, along with dirt and shock proof screens. They often also feature enhanced air filtering and cooling systems, which doesn't require fans the way consumer PCs do. As well as improved protection from any environmental factors like water or dust.

How Rugged Computers Differ from Consumer PCs 

Industrial computers that are designed for more rugged applications than those of the average business are also very different from consumer computers. These computers are generally those that are used in extreme conditions and are required to be more mobile than most industrial computers. 

They are able to feature the toughness of an industrial PC without the usual size and “clunky”-ness, making them look more similar to a consumer computer, but function at a much higher level. These computers also feature greater internal and external security features and more control over operating features. Basically, rugged PCs adapt the abilities of industrial computers to give them the mobility and versatility of consumer computers.

What Industries Use Industrial PCs the Most  

Industrial quality computers are used by a variety of industries. Some of the industries that rely on these high-quality PCs include: avionics, automation, communication, defense, energy, information, medical, and transportation. These industries effect the daily lives of every consumer in many ways and their productivity would not be possible without their use of industrial grade computers. Because they are relied on for such important tasks, they require a level of reliability that cannot be found with any consumer grade computing system. 

Industrial PCs are Un-like Consumer PCs

Consumer PCs are designed for comfort, appearance, and simple functionality. Industrial PCs are designed with entirely different goals in mind. They do not need to have sleek lines or an attractive appearance. They do not need to provide a great level of comfort in how they are used. And they are designed to have a significantly higher level of functionality than any consumer PC. Industrial PCs are also require an extremely high level of durability because they are used in ways that result in much more exposure to the elements. This exposure cannot result in any loss of functionality given the need for these PCs to be completely reliable at all times. When you consider all of these factors, outside of the basic similarities that are fundamental to all computers, industrial and consumer PCs could not be more different.
