If you’re looking for a vibrant city break in a unique city that has a lot more to offer visitors than is often fully understood, then the historic port city of Liverpool surely has it all. This kind of claim is often made about many cities around the globe but in Liverpool’s case, it really is something of an undiscovered gem for those not yet in the know.

This is a city which is home to the biggest collection of museums and art galleries in the UK outside of London. That isn’t bad for a city with around 1/16 of the capital’s population!

Spring is an ideal time to visit the city, not least because of its annual, world famous, sporting event, the Grand National, which is held at Aintree just outside of the city. Aintree and the Grand National steeplechase are famous around the globe and bring visitors in their thousands each year to witness this unique spectacle. This year’s race will take place on Saturday April the 9th and it is a must-see if you can possibly make it. The race has been immortalised in film, including the 1944 epic “National Velvet” starring a teenaged Elizabeth Taylor, along with the 1983 movie “Champions” which tells the remarkable story of the 1981 winner, Aldaniti, and his jockey Bob Champion.

And if you fancy a flutter on this year’s race, all the runners and riders and a few tips and words of advice are included at http://www.grand-national2016.co.uk. Ultimately, though, you may want to pick the name you like the most and have a bet on the horse. That’s part of a British tradition. And if you do so, you certainly won’t be alone. Huge sums of money are staked on the race in the UK alone!

In the city itself, the sporting heritage continues with two world famous football clubs in the shape of Liverpool and Everton.

But if sport really isn’t your thing then fear not, Liverpool wasn’t named European City of Culture in 2008 for nothing! There’s a wealth of art galleries, museums and tours, including numerous Beatles versions, which are all well worth checking out at the city’s official tourist site

The World Museum in Liverpool is particularly worthy of note with its six floors exploring science, culture, space and so much more. It is hugely popular with families.

The Tate Liverpool is a must-see for art lovers and is home to the largest collection of modern art works in the north of England. The Tate is found on the city’s waterfront at the Albert Dock, which is well worth seeing. It’s home to several important international art exhibitions through each year.

And, finally, if shopping is your thing, you won’t be disappointed. Liverpudlians love to shop and are famous for their vibrant fashion sense. The best shopping is at Liverpool ONE with all the shops you could ever need, including larger department stores such as John Lewis and Harvey Nichols.

If you get ever bored with Liverpool, you must be bored with life!
