Keeping your home safe during Euro 2016

22nd June 2016 Print

The 2016 UEFA European Football Championship is set to be one of the most exciting sporting events of the summer but, for those who don't protect their homes, things could quickly turn sour.

After running the numbers in 2014, the British Beer and Pub Association found that 3 million people watched the World Cup in pubs in the UK and, this year, it estimates that as many as 3.5 million people will pop to their local to catch a game.

With so many people across the country heading to pubs and bars to enjoy the sporting action, a lot of homes will be left empty when games are in progress. That, according to security company Verisure, makes them prime targets for criminals.

To help combat criminals and protect your home, Verisure has put together a guide based on the MO of the average burglar. Collating data from 516 home break-in victims, the alarms company has listed some stats that are worth bearing in mind this summer when you're away from your home watching Euro 2016.

Verisure Breaks Down Break-ins

- 15% of burglaries occur in less than 5 minutes: When you factor in pre and post-game socialising and add it to the 90 minutes of action on the pitch, you can quickly see that's a lot of 5-minute windows for a thief to take advantage of.

- 49% of victims are away for a short period of time: Almost half of all home break-ins take place while the occupants are away for a very short period of time (usually between 2-3 hours), which means the average Euro 2016 game could keep you out of the way for more than long enough for a thief to strike.

- 70% of burglaries involve the theft of high-value items: Nearly two-thirds of all home robberies involve high-value items. This means things like your TVs, laptops, iPads and even your car could all go missing while you're down the pub watching Euro 2016, if you fail to take appropriate steps to secure them.
