Co-op reports 57% increase in motor incidents

Co-op Insurance has reported a 57% increase in motor accidents and incidents on Wednesday 28 February, when compared with the previous week (21 Feb), due to the current weather conditions across the UK.

This is the third day of travel disruption caused by heavy snowfall and with Storm Emma now expected to bring further disruption, Co-op is warning motorists to take extra care and only travel if absolutely necessary.

Nick Ansley, Head of Motor Insurance at the Co-op said: “Yesterday we saw a 57% increase in claims and we’re expecting to be just as busy today. We’ve therefore arranged additional motor claims handlers to ensure we are fully prepared.

“Our advice during this time is to follow the guidance from the emergency services and local authorities and to only drive when absolutely necessary.”

Co-op Insurance’s Head of Motor, Nick Ansley’s top tips:

1 Only drive if absolutely necessary. And if necessary, make sure that your car is roadworthy before setting off. Check there’s no snow on your car, check tyres, windscreen wipers and make sure you have enough petrol, oil and water.

2 Remember - speed limit signs mean maximum speed– if there’s ice on the roads, you really need to take extra care and consider your speed

3 Low winter sunlight can impair vision, so take your time at junctions to ensure that you have made a full assessment of the traffic conditions before pulling out

4 Ensure you have a bottle of water, some snacks and a blanket with you in case you breakdown in a remote location

5 Leave extra room between your car and the car in front as if you need to slow down, it will take longer for your car to do so
