What you need to do to have healthy teeth and a beautiful smile

Having a bright, beautiful smile is one of the glaring indications of a healthy lifestyle. The importance of proper oral hygiene cannot be overstressed in a world where we are in constant communication with one another. If your oral health is not in great shape, it can affect the rest of your body as these organs go hand-in-hand. 

Here are a few steps you need to take to have healthy teeth and a beautiful smile all year round.

1. Brush and Floss Your Teeth Regularly

Brushing regularly is very vital if you want to get healthy teeth. Brushing at least twice a day with a soft and standard brush and FDA-approved toothpaste will keep your teeth and gums healthy and prevent plaque buildup. Brushing for at least 2 minutes twice daily is recommended by dentists. Also, make sure you are brushing with fluoride toothpaste to protect the enamel and promote fresh breath. 

Before bedtime, you are recommended to floss to get rid of plaque between and under the teeth because regular brushing with a toothbrush can't reach those tight corners. To floss appropriately, tightly wrap the floss around your finger, and then apply in the spaces of your teeth.

2. See A Dentist Regularly

If you want to keep your teeth healthy, you cannot avoid regular trips to your dentist. Despite being a healthy patient, you still need to have dental coverage in British Columbia if this is your location, so you can easily undergo dental checkups at least twice a year. In most cases, there are parts of your teeth that are a refuge for problems. A trip to a dentist can help you identify any issues on time to avoid tooth loss.

Consulting your dentist at least every six months is enough to make way for healthy teeth. Based on studies, periodontal bacteria is linked with health issues like stroke, diabetes, and heart conditions. 

3. Drink Enough Water

Water is an appropriate drink for your body and is considered the best drink in your quest for healthy teeth. Water helps to rinse your mouth, and the fluoride present in the water helps protect the enamel and prevents the teeth from decaying. However, bottled water lacks the presence of fluoride, so reach out for tap water when you're thirsty. 

Also, in your quest for healthy teeth, be watchful of the liquids you take in. Consuming sugary or acidic drinks too often can lead to tooth decay over time. 

4. Quit Smoking

If you are a chronic smoker, you should consider quitting as the tar and nicotine contained in cigarettes can stain the teeth over time. Teeth stains gotten from smoking can be cleaned via whitening procedures; however, there's also a chance of it soaking into the enamel and causing worse defects. 

The gums are also at risk of being damaged while you smoke, making them develop holes around the teeth. Hence, it makes the teeth look longer with darkened spaces between them. It is also pretty hard to cure gum diseases in patients that are active smokers. 

5. Consume Less Redwine, Coffee, And Tea

Still, on teeth stains, drinks such as tea, coffee, and red wine are huge teeth stainers. Similar to smoking, these drinks stain your teeth but can be cleaned easily. And, there's a chance of it soaking into the enamel. 

Here's an idea: if you know you cannot abstain from these drinks, then you should consider using a straw to take your drink. Drinking through a straw could help reduce the chance of staining more than when you drink directly from the cup or bottle. 

6. Eat Healthily

Many people believe sugary foods like candy, soda, etc., are a primary cause of cavities. While this is all true, there are other meals we consume daily that could harm the teeth in the long run. Carbohydrates such as pasta, rice, and bread are likely to remain on your teeth. Due to this, the surface of your teeth is exposed to the food longer than it should, and carbohydrates break down into sugar quickly. Consuming less sugar or carbohydrate-based foods is a good step in fighting this. You should also eat fruits and vegetables instead as often as you can. While being suitable for your body, most of them are best for your teeth. 

7. Change Your Toothbrush Regularly

You are recommended to change your toothbrush every three months, or even as soon as you notice it isn't suitable for you anymore. As your toothbrush ages, the bristles fade away, making them weak and unable to remove plaque from your teeth effectively. The weak bristles can also be a refuge for fungus or bacteria, which makes them less sanitary for usage. With a fresh, clean, and standard toothbrush, you are sure of cleaner and healthier teeth.
