Off piste with the least

Patchy snow reports across Europe this season may tempt skiers and snowboarders from the relative safety of the well worn pistes in search of snow.

However there are specific terms and conditions to being covered off-piste warns American Express Travel Insurance.

American Express winter sports travel insurance covers experienced skiers or snowboarders off-piste without a guide, and covers inexperienced participants off-piste if they are under the supervision of a guide. Without the right cover, skiers and snowboarders may be liable for any medical and repatriation costs if an accident should occur.

Each year more than 50,000 skiers and snow boarders are rescued from the French Alps – the most popular ski location for Brits - where the cost of airlifting directly off the slopes can cost £2,000.

American Express travel insurance protects winter sports equipment loss and delay and also offers compensation for either a lack of snow - piste closure - or for too much snow – such as when avalanches disrupt travel arrangements.

Joanne Field, Marketing Manager, American Express Travel Insurance advises: “Patchy conditions have been a problem in Europe this season and could tempt holidaymakers to flout rules. Last year there were twice as many accidents in the French Alps than the year before1, so we would encourage everyone to ski or board wisely and obtain appropriate travel insurance cover before they depart.”
