Don’t lose your head (or your shades) – get holiday cover

25th June 2007 Print
Keep an eye on your belongings this summer holiday as research reveals one in eight Brits have lost, or had something stolen, while abroad in the last year.

With pricey holiday must-haves on display, such as the latest digital camera or designer shades, the need for holiday insurance is an essential consideration. The research, from price comparison website moneysupermarket.com, shows personal possessions such as wallets, cameras, mobile phones, luggage and sunglasses or specs are most commonly misplaced or stolen on holiday.

Richard Mason, director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: “With Brits taking advantage of low cost flights and spending more time abroad, it is essential you are covered for cancellation, losing cash, public liability and emergency medical treatment. If travellers don’t insure themselves before going away, their holiday could end up costing a lot more than they budgeted for.

"Beware though of the common practice with providers that if items covered by your home insurance, such as a digital camera, are lost, stolen or damaged on holiday, you will be unable to claim for them on your travel insurance.

“Policies vary significantly with exclusions and limitations commonplace. Read the small print to give peace of mind and ensure your holiday must-haves are covered. You need to think about the specific items you want insurance for as well as the level of cover before shopping around for the best value policy for you.”

moneysupermarket.com recommends at least the following level of cover:

Medical expenses: £2 million
Personal liability: £1 million
Cancellation: £3,000
Baggage: £1,500
Cash: £250.
