Kids go free with AA Travel Insurance

7th August 2007 Print
With the big holiday rush following the end of the school summer term, AA Insurance has not only slashed premiums for online customers – but is offering free cover for kids, too.

At a time when many holidaymakers may be worried about travel insurance after the unregulated sale of insurance by travel agents was slammed by the Treasury, the AA has cut premiums by up to 22 per cent for some cover and allows up to four children aged up to 17 to travel free with an insured adult on a single trip policy.

“The kids go free deal will benefit single parents who might find it hard enough to afford a holiday, without having to buy a family policy that includes two adults,” says Christian Young, director of AA Travel Insurance.

“Buying travel insurance should be simple, transparent and offer good value and that’s what we’re aiming to do. I am concerned that people may just not bother with cover at all and rely on the EHIC reciprocal medical certificate (which used to be called the E111) which is free from post offices – but while you should take that remember it gives only basic protection in Europe.”

Christian Young also points out that while buying insurance from a travel agent or off the supermarket shelf is quick and easy, it’s then vital to then tell the insurer about any medical treatment they have had or pre-existing conditions such as angina, asthma or diabetes.

“Buy from a regulated broker such as AA Insurance or from an insurer and you will be asked to declare that you have no medical history or, if you have, to call your insurer. Disclosing such conditions doesn’t necessarily mean that insurance will be refused. But not disclosing them could result in your policy being voided if you make a claim.”
