From strawberry picking to blackberries

Today’s backpackers hit the road less travelled carrying over one billion pounds worth of valuables in their rucksacks, according to research released today by AA Travel Insurance.

The average backpack and contents is now worth around £450 thanks to our increased access to and reliance on all the latest in technology for keeping in touch and recording our travels. Plus with more sabbatical takers, career changers and later-life explorers undertaking backpacking adventures, these trips are no longer solely the domain of the cash-strapped student with only one change of clothes and a map to his name.

Three quarters (73%) of those questioned classed a mobile phone as an essential item, while 72% wouldn’t leave home without their digital camera to record experiences along their way, meaning that with these items alone, backpackers are hauling around a tidy sum on their backs.

According to the AA’s research, the top five essential backpacking items are a far cry from the basics you might expect on a world trip:

1. Mobile phones
2. Digital camera
3. MP3 player
4. Laptop
5. Hairdryer

Hostile Hostels and Risky Routes

Despite carrying around these luxury rucksacks many backpackers still opt for an authentic experience by travelling on a shoe string, using low security accommodation and transport which can put them at real risk of theft. Half of those questioned would travel by budget coach while 40% are prepared to go the road less travelled, pounding the pavement on foot. In addition 57% bed down in budget hotels and over a quarter (26%) would choose a campsite. Most worryingly, 52% say they would spend a night under the stars without so much as a tent to protect them or their belongings.

Christian Young, head of AA Travel Insurance, says: “It’s understandable that modern travellers want to be able to stay in touch and be able to record memories of the people and places they see. However, with all these technological treasures in their bags it has never been more important for backpackers to ensure they are fully insured so that they can explore with peace of mind.”
