Cover roulette doesn’t pay when it comes to car insurance

16th September 2009 Print
Will Thomas, Head of Motor says "Confused.com is in full support of the new legislation that means that cars can no longer be kept without insurance on or off the road and motorists breaking the rules risk a fine of up to £1000.

The penalties for being uninsured are far reaching and stretch beyond points on licences and fines. Gambling with cover is a false economy no matter how careful a driver thinks they are, they can never rely on others to maintain the same level of vigilance. Those struggling to pay for insurance and considering going without will likely be unable to afford to repair their vehicle in the event of an accident and certainly will not be able to afford the cost of legal proceedings if they damage another person's vehicle or cause injury. Driving without insurance is by no means a victimless crime, with uninsured drivers estimated to be costing the insurance industry around £500 million that unfortunately translates into higher premiums for law abiding motorists with the MIB estimates it adds around £30 to each policy. Whilst more needs to be done to discourage people from keeping and driving cars without insurance, this is definitely a step in the right direction.

There are ways of minimizing the costs so drivers don't feel they have to take this desperate measure and sacrifice cover. With price comparison making it easier than ever to get the right policy at the right price for a driver's individual circumstances, now is the time to get online and start searching for the best deal. All insurers rate differently - some insurance providers specialize in specific risk groups such as younger drivers, learner drivers and female drivers so it is important not to call off the search if renewal prices are higher than expected, as the consequences for going without are not worth the risk."
