Remember, remember the 5 November
Every year the majority of Briton’s celebrate bonfire night without any mishaps, however for some, the fun can turn to emotional and financial devastation caused by fire, damage and injury.Advising consumers on how to celebrate safely and limit damage, Debra Williams, Managing Director of Confused.com, UK insurance price comparison service said: “The majority of us love celebrating bonfire night and use it as a great excuse to gather friends and family and throw a party. If this is likely to be you, make sure the necessary precautions are in place to ensure everyone has a fun but safe night.
“First and foremost, if you are putting on a display ensure you have sufficient home insurance before lighting a bonfire or setting off fireworks. Although it is a legal requirement for homeowners to have buildings insurance covering the house and its land against accidental damage, contents insurance is still optional.
“Around bonfire night we’d always advise people to protect their contents with proper cover whether hosting a party or not, even if it means shopping around for a deal at short notice.
“Your home contents policy should provide cover for free standing belongings in both the house and garden which could be accidentally damaged by fire, including that caused by stray fireworks. Contents insurance also covers you should you inadvertently cause damage to your neighbour's garden or any out buildings.
“Finally, if you are throwing a bonfire night party, dig out your policy and check the small print to ensure you know what you are covered for. Make sure you are covered for public liability because if someone were to be injured as a result of your celebrations, you could be left exposed to huge financial costs. Even if you have sufficient cover, make sure you don’t invalidate your policy by conducting dangerous acts such as pouring petrol on the bonfire or setting off illegal fireworks.
“For the perfect Guy Forks celebration, ensure reasonable care and caution is practiced and most of all, have fun.”
