Don’t get caught out by a bang this bonfire night
Three million people are planning to celebrate bonfire night with a bonfire or fireworks display in their back garden, according to research by Post Office Home Insurance, which is reminding people not to overlook their safety during the festivities. In total a third of the UK population is planning to celebrate bonfire night versus only 16 per cent who planned to don their Halloween costumes and head off ‘trick or treating’.
Although six in ten of those celebrating bonfire night will be heading to a public display, Post Office is urging everyone to take care, especially as half of those celebrating at home will have children present. People should ensure they have adequate safety measures and protection in place, particularly in the event of damage to their home or garden.
Each year four of the most common insurance claims relating to 5th November celebrations are:
Shattered windows
Fire spreading to outbuildings or homes
Garden damage (including damage to garden furniture)
Personal liability for injury to other parties e.g. guest or neighbours
Post Office’s director of insurance Phil Ashkuri said: “With three million people set to have a bonfire or fireworks at home, we urge people to make sure they have taken the necessary steps to protect themselves and their family.
“If people are going to celebrate bonfire night at home, they should also think about how they can protect their home, ensuring that they have adequate home insurance. Garden furniture in particular is one of the most common insurance claims so it’s important to check your policy covers this. Always check your policy, or with your provider if you have any doubts.”
