Don’t be a victim of bonfire burglary
Abbey is urging homeowners not to leave themselves at risk from burglars as they celebrate bonfire night. While many people are out at fireworks displays for the evening or in their back gardens they can sometimes fail to take basic precautionary measures to protect their property and Abbey is asking everyone to remember the simple rule: ‘lock up, lights on’.
Prasad Shastri, Head of Insurance Marketing at Abbey, said: "This time of year burglars make the most of the increasing hours of darkness and the noise of fireworks which can cause a distraction while they break into a home. 22.9 million adults, half of the UK, feel more at risk from burglary of their homes during this time of the year.
“If you are in a different part of the house, make sure that the main entrances are secure, and make your home look occupied if you are going to be away from it for the evening. Perhaps leave a light on in the front room or hallway and leave the radio on.
“The period around Halloween and bonfire night has often been referred to as ‘mischief week’ as communities are subject to anti-social behaviour and criminal damage. We would advise all homeowners to ensure they keep their property and possessions protected with comprehensive insurance”.
Abbey offers unlimited sum insured (Peace of Mind) and specified sum insured (Essentials). This is the third year running that Abbey has been awarded a five star rating by Defaqto, making it one of only five providers to have ever achieved this honour.
