Lloyds TSB Insurance: Flooding report

17th December 2007 Print
Following the publication of Michael Pitt’s independent review into the summer floods, Phil Loney, managing director Lloyds TSB Insurance said: “The events of last summer were a lesson to us all. But unfortunately it will not be the last time we’ll face a disaster on that scale.

“This report highlights the fact that better planning and faster reactions, might have lessened the impact of the floods. But it also reminds us of the need for homeowners to be better prepared. And that’s something we ignore at our peril.

“We all know that it’s just a matter of time before serious floods strike again, so it is vital that we do everything possible to prevent our homes being damaged so catastrophically. It’s true that insurance is the last line of defence in disaster such as the floods, but clearly there are steps we can all take to try and prevent the flood waters doing their worst.”

In order to help homeowners at risk of future floods, or those who have already been hit, Lloyds TSB Insurance has joined forces with the National Flood Forum to launch a website, helpimflooded.co.uk.

The site is the first of its kind to be launched by a major insurer. As well as general advice on how to deal with the immediate consequences of flooding, the site includes:

A step by step guide to help people form local community groups as a way of raising their concerns with the authorities.

A section warning of the danger of rogue traders – and providing tips on how to spot them.

Preventative measures – including a guide for homeowners who want to find out whether they are at risk of flooding.

Advice for homeowners on what to do following a flood warning in their area.

A list of essential contacts for anyone at risk or affected by floods, including details of the Environment Agency and other insurance companies.
