Upsurge in property damage claims as weather takes toll
Following fierce storms across much of the UK in the past week and with more predicted in the coming weeks, Sainsbury’s Home Insurance is warning homeowners to check that they are adequately insured in the event of any damage to their property. It expects to see a significant increase in the number of claims as the bad weather takes its toll.Analysis of industry data by Sainsbury’s Home Insurance shows that there was a 10% increase in the value of claims for damage to homes between 2004 and 2006, hitting just over £3 billion in 2006. And in 2007 the summer floods alone cost £3 billion, making it the worst year yet.
Steve Johnson, Head of Home Insurance, Sainsbury’s said: “High winds and flooding have been seen across the UK in the past week, putting thousands of homes at risk of damage. Some home buildings policies work on a sum-insured basis rather than offering unlimited cover. As such, people need to be careful that their home is adequately insured. We believe unlimited buildings cover gives homeowners greater piece of mind.”
Sainsbury’s Home Insurance offers the following advice to homeowners in the event of stormy weather:
In the case of flooding, planning ahead will save time and improve your flood protection. Make sure for example, you –
decide what you will do with furniture
keep drains clear, ensuring they and the area around them is clear of debris
keep a stock of sandbags if you know your area is liable to flood
Damage to garden sheds may not be covered by certain policies – Sainsbury’s Home Insurance offers such cover
If the damage is the result of your neighbour neglecting to adequately maintain their own property you may be able to reclaim costs from them
Consult your insurer before arranging repair work
Ensure that you use a qualified tradesman who can guarantee their work – Sainsbury’s Home Insurance offers Home Emergency cover with all claims work carried out by approved contractors and guaranteed for 12 months.
