NFU Mutual offers advice to homeowners battered by the storms
Following the storm that hit parts of the UK last night and continued through today, rural insurer NFU Mutual is already dealing with claims for damage to homes and farm buildings – with many more reports of minor damage still coming in.NFU Mutual agents and staff have been working since the storm struck to help policyholders whose homes, vehicles, or businesses have been damaged by the gales and torrential rain.
"Our prime concern is to help our policyholders quickly when they are in difficulties," said Richard Pilkington, Technical Claims Manager.
"At times like this our local network of agents really comes into its own. Local staff have been able to give advice on the spot, make arrangements for damage inspections, and in some cases settle claims immediately. We have pulled out all the stops to help badly-affected policyholders get emergency repairs under way, and are making immediate payments where necessary."
He explained that the majority of claims reported so far were for roof damage to homes, farm buildings and industrial premises, with fallen trees which have hit vehicles and buildings making up a proportion of the claims as well.
Pilkington concludes, “There has been severe damage to a significant number of buildings – particularly those in exposed positions, and we have called in loss adjusters to assess the damage and help our customers. Our local offices in badly affected areas have authority to settle minor claims themselves.”
NFU Mutual advises policyholders who have suffered damage to get emergency repairs carried out straight away, and to contact their local NFU Mutual office or its helpline for advice - and to get their insurance claims underway.
Tips for dealing with storm damage
Personal safety comes first – only carry out an assessment of your home if it’s safe to do so.
Don’t use any electrical items that have been affected by water.
When possible take photographs of the damage.
If emergency repairs are necessary, make sure they are undertaken straight away, and ensure that the property is secured as soon as possible. Keep all estimates and receipts.
If you are in need of urgent help please ring the NFU Mutual 24 hour domestic emergency helpline 0800 282652.
