Beware of rocketing claims on Bonfire Night
Alarming figures from Tesco Home Insurance highlight the worries of Guy Fawkes night. British home owners are in danger of being victims on 5 November with claims up on the average by a massive 240%.Analysis of previous 5 November claims shows that homes are at risk from opportunist thieves who strike with the knowledge that people will be out and about.
With this in mind, those people who are attending public displays should remember to set burglar alarms, and leave a security light on to deter thieves.
As some public displays around the UK have been cancelled due to a lack of funding, private celebrations may prove a popular choice for those wishing to take part. If celebrating out in the back garden, homeowners should be sure to lock-up the front of the house, otherwise criminals may strike under cover of darkness and noisy celebrations.
With homes vulnerable at this time of year, Tesco Personal Finance is reminding homeowners to make sure their insurance is up to date.
Jim Bruce, Head of Home Insurance at Tesco Personal Finance, says: "Bonfire night is an enjoyable time of year for the family but, with more people staying at home to celebrate, make sure you take the necessary precautions to protect your property and yourselves. And always remember to follow the fireworks code."
Always follow the firework code:
Keep fireworks in a sealed box or tin
Use them one at a time, replacing the lid immediately
NEVER put fireworks in your pocket
Read the instructions carefully, using a torch or hand lamp NEVER use a naked flame
Light fireworks at arms length using a taper or a firework lighter
Stand well back and NEVER return to a firework after it has been lit, it could explode in your face
Ensure that all children with fireworks are well supervised
NEVER throw fireworks
Keep all pets and animals indoors
Take care of sparklers, wear gloves to hold them and dispose of sparklers in a bucket of water as soon as they are finished
