Christmas Day fires set to strike 300% more homes

9th December 2008 Print
The number of homes damaged by fire is set to rise by 300 percent on Christmas Day, with many cases starting in the oven, warns MORE TH>N Home insurance.

As Brits take time out of their hectic schedules and slip into the Christmas spirit, it seems that they are taking their mind off a bit more than their day to day lives. In fact, people will become so forgetful on Christmas Day that they will put themselves and their family in danger by forgetting to take simple safety precautions.

Last Christmas, MORE TH>N saw a sharp increase in the number of fire incidents reported, with most originating from the oven or candles catching light to surrounding materials. As such, the insurer says safety should be at the top of everyone’s Christmas wish list.

Head of MORE TH>N Home insurance, Keith Maxwell, said “Amidst the celebrations of Christmas Day, MORE TH>N is urging people to be cautious as the nightmare scenario of a Christmas in flames can occur. For peace of mind, it is a good idea to make sure home insurance is up to date so that, should a fire take place, the home will be covered.”

MORE TH>N has offered a few pieces of guidance to help Christmas run smoothly:

Carefully monitor what you have cooking in the oven, remember to turn it off when the food has been taken out

Candles should never be left in an unattended room, keep them away from curtains and other materials

Keep tinsel and decorations away from sources of heat

Don’t overload sockets

Don’t leave tree lights on when you go out

Remember to turn off outside lights overnight
