‘Manbag' wearers carry theft risk this Christmas

12th December 2008 Print
The growth in popularity of ‘manbags' over the last year is likely to see them appear on many men's Christmas wish lists. However, the Post Office is urging the increasing number of ‘manbag' wearers to take care, as they could be left unprotected against opportunistic and fashionable thieves.

In the past year the popularity of the ‘manbag' has risen dramatically, with an array of male celebrities ranging from Kanye West to David Beckham sporting the latest trend. This trend has quickly crossed over to the high street, with the men's fashion chain Topman reporting a 50 per cent boost in the sale of manbags, compared to the same time last year.

A spokesperson from Topman said: "The increase in popularity of manbags is unsurprising given the changing attitudes amongst men towards fashion. There has been a mixture of influences from the catwalk and high profile celebrities that has meant the manbag has become an accepted fashion accessory for men. The likes of David Beckham broke with tradition and introduced the manbag to the public, and this has since carried on with current trends such as the geek chic look."

In light of the increasing popularity of manbags, the Post Office is urging men to ensure that they have adequate insurance for their bag and its contents.

Emma Baunach, Post Office home insurance, said: "With men now carrying more expensive personal possessions on them than ever before, they are more at risk from theft. It's important that men consider this a serious risk and take steps to protect their possessions by taking out personal possessions cover as part of their contents insurance.

"A bag on its own can be quite expensive, especially if it is designer. When you take this into account along with the cost of replacing your mobile, iPod, laptop and wallet you can easily be looking at a cost that runs into hundreds of pounds. To avoid this, a simple contents insurance policy, such as Post Office Home Contents Insurance, can cover your bag and personal possessions when you are away from your home."
