Post Office comments on extreme weather

12th February 2009 Print
Commenting on the recent extreme weather Emma Baunach, Post Office home insurance manager, said: "February has brought a host of extreme weather hazards to the UK, with the most severe snow storms we have seen for 18 years and now heavy rain has led to over 100 flood warnings. There is always risk of property damage from adverse weather, but recent events highlight how important it is to have the right level of cover in place to protect both your home and your belongings.

"Whilst most contents policies will cover you for household items, it is essential that you know what your contents limit is and notify your insurer if you have any items that exceed this. For instance, you may find expensive artwork and valuables are not included if they exceed the value stated in your policy.

"As well as making sure you have the right level of cover, you can also take simple precautions that can limit weather damage. To minimize the risk of freezing pipes in the cold weather ensure your loft insulation is sufficiently thick and leave your heating on a low setting while you are out of the house.

"Should your pipes freeze and burst, or if your home suffers flood or storm damage you should contact your insurance company's claim line or home assistance number immediately. Post Office Building and Contents Insurance includes a 24 hour home assistance service as standard in all policies which can advise you on the next steps, and can help put you in touch with local tradesmen."
