DIY nation! A quarter of Brits planning to ‘DIY' this Easter

6th April 2009 Print
A quarter of Britain will be staying indoors this Easter weekend to decorate and renovate, according to a new survey.

The survey by home insurance provider M&S Money found that 28% of householders will have a go at ‘DIY' this weekend.

The poll also revealed that almost two-thirds (64%) of people are more likely to try to cut costs by attempting DIY rather than employing a tradesman.

Judith Roberts, M&S Insurance Manager, said: "Easter is always a popular time of the year to get jobs done around the home. The current financial climate means that even more people will be having a go at DIY, either as an alternative to moving home or instead of employing a professional.

"It's worth bearing in mind that DIY doesn't always go as planned. Insurance companies receive many claims involving DIY-related accidents. Always make sure you plan well before attempting DIY and seek professional advice if necessary. Also check that your home insurance policy covers you for accidental damage and whether there is a limit to that cover."

The M&S Premier home insurance policy provides unlimited cover for accidental damage in the home.

M&S Money offers the following tips to help reduce the risk of a DIY disaster this Easter:

Before starting, think about whether youhave the right skills and knowledge for the job;

Check with your local council if you think you may need a permit for a large project;

Take extra care when using machinery: most power tools have safety guards but caution is necessary;

When working with heights ensure that the ladder or scaffold you are using is secure;
Use protective clothing, such as overalls, gloves and eye goggles.

M&S Money is giving customers the chance to win a £5,000 home makeover. Anyone who takes out a home insurance policy on or before 14 June 2009 will be entered into the home makeover prize draw. You could win over £5,000 to spend in-store at M&S on improving your home.
