Consumer Focus welcomes POCA decision

13th November 2008 Print
Consumer Focus, the new independent champion for consumers, welcomed today's news that Post Office Limited is to retain its contract to pay the pensions and benefits to over four million users of the Post Office Card Account (POCA).

Richard Bates, Head of Community Services at Consumer Focus, said: "POCA users will be delighted that they can continue to access their money in an environment they trust and that is within easy reach. The decision is good news for consumers and provides a bedrock for the viability of the post office network."

Consumer Focus thinks the Post Office Limited is in a strong position to play a much more expanded role in financial services.

Richard Bates added: "Today's decision is a good step in the right direction. People tell us they need the option to deposit money, pay bills and make savings in their POCA account. The Government must now provide and promote these services."

A transformed POCA that meets its users' needs must be an essential part of the portfolio of financial services that the Government is now proposing for the Post Office - it will provide a valuable bridge to financial inclusion. Consumer Focus looks forward to working with Government to make the vision for the Post Office a reality.
