moneysupermarket.com: Barclaycard's revised Football Credit Card

17th July 2007 Print
Commenting on the revised football affinity card from Barclaycard – the Barclaycard Football Credit Card – Robert Kenley, head of credit cards at moneysupermarket.com, said: “As football affinity cards go this one is ‘Premier league’ in name and nature and more than just a few points ahead of the rest.

“True club fans may not be happy with loyalty shared across the whole of the Premiership rather than their own club, but this card’s benefits eat, live and breathe football. Ironically the Barclaycard Football card might even appeal most to members of swanky golf clubs. Its 0 per cent loan on any sports memberships is aimed mainly at Premiership season ticket holders who typically pay between £350 and £950, but for golfers at exclusive clubs paying thousands of pounds, this is a very tempting offer indeed.

“The points scheme is very similar to MBNA's 72 affinity cards with English and Scottish football clubs. True it offers ten points per pound spent, compared to one point per pound with MBNA, but its rewards require about ten times as many points.

“While the kudos of holding a club card in your wallet is understandable, football fans would be well advised to check exactly what benefits they will derive with their team card compared with regular credit cards from across the wider market. Even the most loyal of football fans should always shop around for financial products that offer the most suitable and competitive deal and not be swayed by gimmicks or perks.”
