On the 13 September, around 150 Barclaycard employees and customers were the first to use contactless technology to make donations of around £750 to three charities via specially designed and installed contactless payment terminals at the Oxo Tower in London.

For the event, to celebrate Barclaycard's sponsorship of the Mayor's Thames Festival, specially designed contactless payment terminals were created where guests could use a limited edition designed Oxo Tower/Barclaycard contactless enabled card. The card was pre-loaded with £5 to enable guests to make a donation to one of three charities - Family Action, Help a London Child and Training 4 Life, by holding the card close to one of the three contactless readers to donate the money.

Stewart Roberts, Business Development Director, Payment Acceptance at Barclaycard, said: "The Barclaycard charity contactless payment initiative was really well received by guests at the event as it was quick and simple to use. This is a further example of how contactless technology can be used in the future, to enable people to make charitable donations, via their contactless payment cards in a quick and easy manner without having to scramble around for loose cash, as well as for use in a traditional retail environment. We are constantly researching new technologies and innovations to create the payment device of the future that will help make payments easier."

The terminals were developed in collaboration with Wincor Nixdorf.
