Brits want to be lottery layabouts
Just five percent of us love our current job enough to turn up for work on Monday if we won the lottery over the weekend, according to latest research from Abbey Savings. The rest of us would like nothing more than to be a lottery layabout, spending our days as we see fit.If we didn’t have to work, most Brits have a good idea what they’d do with all that time and money. The majority of Brits (56 per cent) would indulge in their hobbies or interests and 47 per cent would go gallivanting around the world. Only 30 per cent of us would devote more time to our loved ones.
A further 18 per cent would not give up work entirely, and instead use their windfall to set up their own business. Six per cent would hit the books and go back to studying.
Brits disagree over the value of money that they’d have to win to feel financially secure. 39 per cent would require over £250,000, but 14 per cent would be happy with around £50,000.
Reza Attar-Zadeh, Head of Savings and Investments at Abbey, said: “Clearly Brits are working to live, rather than living to work. The vast majority of us would give up our jobs in a flash if we win the lottery this weekend. Of course that doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re all miserable in our jobs, but clearly we would all prefer to work a little less and live a little more.
“While you can’t rely on a lottery win, with some careful financial planning, you can end up with more disposable income to spend on the things you most enjoy, such as hobbies or travelling.
